Read Across America Day 2022

What is Read Across America Day?

March 2 is Read Across America Day (RAAD), established in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) to help promote a lifelong love of reading for our country’s youth. On Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading.

Inland SoCal United Way is proud to support childhood literacy and continues its tradition of partnering with local school districts to promote Read Across America Day. Our role is to connect Inland SoCal volunteers with available RAAD reading opportunities in their communities.

Why is reading aloud important?
Reading aloud is one of the most important things we can do with children. Reading aloud builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about. When kids love and excel at reading, they are more likely to succeed in their overall school performance.

How can you get involved?

There is a need for in-person and virtual volunteer readers throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Opportunities are typically on or around March 2 and usually for grades K-6. If you can spare a couple of hours of time and would like to make a positive impact in the lives of local students, please join us! Sign up to receive more information below.
